…Seething with pure envy, all the ladies got together and decided not to patronize my salon. Instead, they went home and tied up their hair with scarves. You can best believe it; I saw it with my own eyes. It was just as well, though, because God had a plan.
A few days passed. One morning I was standing in my salon looking out of the window, watching the cars go by, when something came over me. For a few moments it was as if I was outside, looking in at the world through a glass, as though I was detached from everything around me and I was seeing a vision.
I asked, “Dear God, what am I doing here?” It was the strangest feeling, as if here meant that I was from somewhere out there. It took me thirty-one years to ask God this relevant question, and because of the question, I believe I experienced eternity; there were no constraints on my life whatsoever. I felt a higher calling and that I had the power to be whatever I was being called to. I had always felt different growing up anyway, and this was the confirmation of that feeling.
Why am I sharing this experience? Because this was one of the times God visited me. This unusual experience showed me that my destiny wasn’t determined by a group of people. Their choice to stay away from the salon was a sign that my season for being there was over. People come and go, but God remains faithful.
No matter the circumstance, you must find the strength and begin to sense your own significance, as I did. If you don’t, you will live your life dictated by people’s opinions and circumstances. Let me give you a couple of examples.
In Arizona, there are lots of woodpeckers. I was on my usual three-mile walk through the neighborhood early one morning. A woodpecker was perched on the telephone pole. He pecked on the metal box at rapid speed, like the sound of a drummer in a regimental band. It was plenty noisy. He pecked time after time, obviously getting nowhere. The woodpecker didn’t realize he was out of his element. His beak was not designed to peck on metal, but rather on wood or cacti. What had happened to cause the woodpeckers to do something so unnatural? These birds had slowly adapted to an environment that was hardly conducive to them.
Then there’s the cat I saw as she crouched, ready to attack her little feathered prey. The moment the cat attempted to pounce, the birds flew away. She tried time after time, but no matter how persistent she was, she could never succeed. Her master had put a bell around her neck that announced her arrival, and this alerted the birds to her presence. She would find it impossible to live up to her fullest potential. This feline had to live her days bound by what her master wanted her to be instead of what she was created to be.
These are simple examples, but even so, they can be applied to our lives. You see, if you don’t know your own significance and purpose, you will get sucked into a vacuum, forced into something or someone that you were not intended to be.
A prime example is a woman who is drawn into prostitution, coerced and intimidated by her so-called lover, who is, in reality, a pimp. He doesn’t care how she is affected at all. He beats her into
submission until she no longer resists. Eventually she succumbs to a depraved lifestyle. His one chief goal is personal gain—money. God has given us dominion, the power to reign in life, to rise above every demonic force that comes against us, through Jesus Christ (see Romans 5:17). How do we attain this essential way of life? The answer is that we must seek God. It is He who reveals to us His will for our lives so that we may know which path to take.
It is crucial that we grab a hold of this verse in the Psalms: “And the son of man, that You visit him.” Throughout my life, the Lord would visit me. I didn’t always understand it, but He looked in on me and showed me, in His awesome ways, that I had a divine purpose, one that was bigger than me. As much as I loved styling hair for the ladies, the calling of God on my life was far greater. Yet in order to know that divine purpose, I had to pursue my Creator, and I encourage you to do the same. No one can do it for you.
Myles Munroe delivered a great message to the Body of Christ entitled, “Power of Purpose.” He said,
“If you want to know the purpose of a thing, don’t ask the thing. Purpose is only found in the mind of the creator of a thing. Only the maker of the thing knows the true purpose.

Note from the Author: Knowing your Godly significance in life is the utmost importance for everyone on the Planet. For many who have experienced brokenness, achieving this goal can be a long-lasting struggle. Coming into one’s own and being comfortable with who he or she is created to be is an uphill journey. One of the main reason is you have an adversary that strategically plots to strip you of your identity, and trauma is a sure way to try and destroy the inner person leaving a gaping hole within the soul. I’ve experienced this; therefore, I can tell you that there is hope.
Dear beloved, if you will allow me, I will speak into your life by the power of the Spirit. First, you are significant, uniquely made by God. He has created you for a specific purpose. Before you entered your mother’s womb, He embellished you with gifts and talents and wrapped them in your destiny. As a result, you have been equipped with everything needed enabling you to accomplish His plan. You were born for such a time as this.
My prayer: May the Father reveal to you this day your divine significance as you seek Him with all your heart – may He grant you the grace to rise and live out your purpose in the earth; in the mighty name of Jesus Christ; AMEN.
“Rising is not easing, but rise we must…
Your destiny awaits you”
